Holbox Island
Holbox (pronounced "hall-bosh") is an old fishing village located near the north-eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean.
The island is also a protected site of the Yum Balam Ecological Reserve. Off the tourist beaten track, Holbox attracts and holds captive seafood lovers, nature seekers, swimmers and fishermen alike.
It offers an excellent choice of aquatic activities, such as sailing, windsurf, kitesurf, or kayaking. Snorkeling, with or without air tank, reveals incredibly beautiful sights in its crystal-clear waters. Pale-blond sands, unspoiled tropical beaches (in certain parts, completely deserted) make of Holbox the perfect option for people in search of a unique travelling experience.
In this little Eden, bird or marine life watchers can see dolphins, turtles, pelicans and pink flamingos, as part of daily life. However, for the most adventurous, tours can easily be arranged to watch crocodiles or, in season, the unique experience swimming with the famous whale shark, the biggest fish on earth.
